Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) also known as Sponge Iron is produced through the reduction of iron ore by a reducing gas or elemental carbon produced from natural gas or coal at an approximate temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius.

Sponge Iron is commonly used in the iron and steel industry as a substitute for scrap in induction and arc furnaces. Over the years, due to the shortage of melting scrap and its high price, sponge iron has become a significant raw material for manufacturing high quality steel.
